Strong Woman

I’ve long been a fan of what I like to call, “Strong Woman Songs (SWS).” SWS are sung by women and depict the emotional strength of women in a “dig your nails in the grit and pull yourself up off the ground” sort of way. Gloria Gaynor’s I will Survive, as well as Bye-Bye from Jo Dee Messina, Someday, by Mariah Carey, and (cough) I saw the Sign, by Ace of Base, all inspired me to throw away the Kleenex and put on my dancing shoes after myriad break ups.

It was a lifetime ago, but still I remember. And I still cannot resist the need to shake my hips and hoist that hair brush up to my lips when songs of that nature come on the radio. I call it girl power.

As much as I do love that genre of songs, I’ve realized over time that real strength does not come from any ounce of determination or will that I can muster. Nor does it come in a pair of high heels or a shade of red lipstick. My real strength comes when I admit my weaknesses and latch onto Jesus, enabling him to carry me through this life and into the next. My real strength is not mine at all…it is His.

This song from Natalie Grant, I Will Not Be Moved is one of my new favorites. It’s sung in that “Strong Woman” style, but the real hero is Jesus. For more Then Sings My Soul Saturday, visit Amy at Sings, Miracle and Wonders.

This is a great song, but I probably never would have seen the video without stopping by. I love the motif, it's very reminiscent of Lita Ford.

It's funny, my forray onto Christian music has only been going on for about 3 years, but Natalie Grant is one of the most influential. Her song "Held" helped me grieve when I lost my grandmother and pregnancy wthin dys of each other, "Brave" always gets me pumped up for speaking to others about Jesus, and "In Better Hands" is just inspirational and helps me through day-to-day life. What else can I say? She's awesome!

Great post! I love your thoughts here. And I love Natalie Grant. I just started following her on Twitter and it's so neat to hear how "normal" she is!!

Hugs,

:-) Susan

P.s. Sorry I made a typo in my first comment and had to repost.

Blessings Angela...I guess I like Strong Woman Songs also...but only recognize Mariah from your group and of course, my favorite Natalie Grant.

Your words are so true! We, women need "girl power"...and on Christ the solid rock, we stand...His strength is sufficient and as we are weak or even broken...He is strong!

I love this chorus...& I will not be moved!!!

Hope you make it over to my place, I'd like to pass on some INSPIRATION for you to bring home!
Happy TSMSS & enjoy your weekend!

Oh WOW! Now that's a Strong Woman song! Funny, I never really thought of songs in that term before, but it is so true, there are definitely songs that make me want to stand up and DANCE!

Not to step on toes but that song drives me nuts. I love the words but I hate how she sings it and makes her voice all weird and deep.

I like a song by FireFlight called "Unbreakable" that is SWEET!

P.S. FireFlight is a chick lead singer. Its Christian rock. VERY cool!

As it is late and I don't want to disturb any of my people, I won't play this song right now....BUT it is a terrific song! SWS! I love that! :)

You go, you strong woman of the Lord, you!

I agree that "I will not be moved" is awesome! I find myself singing it at strange times of the day, like when I wake up in the middle of the night. Terrific!
However, I'm not a huge fan of techno, so Ace of Base never made my hit list. My sister loves that song, however, so I have heard it plenty!

Great song! That chick in the mask was a little scary. I didn't completely follow that but I think she was breaking away from some kind of bondage.... I'll have to think on that one awhile.

Thanks for sharing this song!

Now don't worry...there's no shame in admitting to liking Ace of Base. Well, there's a little shame, but I liked them, too. :)

Very true: our strength is His unto us.

Funny how music can evoke such memorable places/feelings within us.

Great message in that song!

I agree you should never hold a hand that holds you down. I am all for strong women. I believe we all have our own power that we own. Too many people over value what they are and undervalue what they are not. Find your strengths and virtues and don't apologize for being bold or courageous. We may only have one life to live, but if you do it right--one is enough.

Also she is not a good example of a strong women if you want examples of strong women google breast cancer survivors. But hey at least she's not Britney Spears.

Hi Lauren!

Thanks for commenting. My mom is a breast cancer survivor. In fact, many women in my family have had breast cancer...some are still alive, some are not. I do still believe that true strength comes from Christ...and that by admitted to my weaknesses makes me stronger. I remember seeing this in action when I was just 8 years old and my grandmother was battling breast cancer. Blessings to you. (Angela of Becoming Me and ALL that Naz
